Last week we started the discussion of themes in Lady Chatterley's Lover. This week we will continue this discussion now that you have had a chance to finish the novel. What themes do you see in the novel? Do you recognize the themes mentioned in the handout? Add your thoughts and add your own themes discovered.
I am going to write about love and relationships in general because iam tired of writing about Connie. I think love between men and women are pretty much the same across the board. Most patners want to have a general attraction to there partners and to have some of the same ideas on there future to conisde. But what really holds a relationship together is love being loved and returning that love.
You are so totally right Jake. Being loved and returning that love really does hold a relatioinship together. Attraction and similar ideas are also important in a relationship. I think it's great how you were able to pull a theme from the novel into real life.
My favorite theme was rebirth/renewal. I feel like I can completely relate to a renewal of life. Doesn't that happen every time you change jobs, move or even meet a new friend? If you view each change you go through as a renewal, then Lady Constance went through quite a few rebirth/renewals. The first time I noticed a renewal in Connie, though subtle, was when she realized she was happier in a relationship that favored on the mental side versus physical. Both Clifford and Connie went through a rebirth when they got married. Connie again has a subtle renewal when Michaelis and her stop seeing each other. Connie transitioned very well from no intimacy through end of affair, coming out the other side a new person. Clifford had a huge rebirth when he became paralyzed, which shows that a rebirth can have both good and bad effects. I believe one of Connie's grand rebirths was the moment she knew she was in love with Mellors. Connie's other grand rebirth was her pregnancy. Not only is your mind going through a rebirth during pregnancy, so is your body.
