Dr. Cooper mentioned Alienation and Loneliness as a theme, I'm not much of a reader and haven't read any of the three books that fall in this catagory but I am interested in both Fahrenheit 451 and Slaughterhouse-Five. I believe Ruth wanted to rea...

Mod 2 Blog 3: Theme

I think that the underlying message in this book was really good. Or at least what I took from it was. At the end one of the guys’ talks about the Phoenix bird and how it built a pyre and burnt itself up, but then it sprung out of the ashes to do it over and over. He also says that they knowing the silly mistake they made can prevent it from happening again. I think that’s huge because when we learn from mistakes can we really call them mistakes? If we are denied information and the government o… Continue

Mod 2 Blog 2: Conflict

The conflict of Fahrenheit 451 was most defiantly man vs. society but also for a little while man vs. self. Toward the beginning is where we mostly see man vs. self. Guy Montag is a Firefighter who must burn down houses that are found with any books. He meets a young girl and begins to realize how truly unhappy he is. Deep down he knows why and fights against his own thoughts until he was forced to burn a lady that chose to stay in her house and burn with her books. He wanted to know and feel so… Continue

This week has been based on finding books for our group to read for our presentation. It has been a little difficult because the list of books Kathy that interested Kathy and she initially came up with don’t seem to have much of a theme. At this point I am still unsure of what I am reading as well as the rest of the group, we might possibly need to look outside the list. Here is the list: The Grapes of Wrath [1939] John Steinbeck, Slaughterhouse-Five [1969] Kurt Vonnegut, To Kill a Mockingbird [… Continue

Blog 2 Imagery

At the beginning of the book there is a lot of imagery on how the characters and the house look, I’m going to give a few examples. First I’ll talk about Clifford. He has a small motor chair that he drives himself slowly around in the park. We know it is in the 1920’s so that helps to picture the chair. It goes on to say he has a ruddy, health-looking face, and pale-blue, challenging bright eyes. “His shoulders were broad and strong, his hands were very strong. He was expensively dressed, and wor… Continue

Blog 1 Foreshadowing

I want to talk a little about the foreshadowing toward the beginning of the book. The first part I noticed was when it talk about sex and the fact that Clifford was a virgin before marrying. Sex meant little to him, “the intimacy was deeper, more personal than that.” Constance also was more into the mental and intellectual connection. Therefore when Clifford was sent home “smashed” and was no longer able to perform sex there was no surprise that Connie stuck to him passionately.

Early on the bo… Continue
