I did my journaling a little backwards and had put for week 7 the reasoning behind banning The Kite Runner, so I will make up for that in this week. There isn't really a literary term for where I am at in the book. Baba and Amir have made it out o...

Journal 16 - Final post

My project is on the book "A Time to Kill" by John Grisham.

I did the wiki - wetpaint and you can access it @ smcmary.wetpaint.com. I was able to add a trailer clip from the movie that was available from its own website. I even ended up renting the movie after reading the book. This story give a small bit of insight of what racism is like. I tried to focus mainly on what the story line was in the book, but added a few facts found on the FBI website as far as cross burnings, hate crimes, and som… Continue

Journal 15 - reasons for banning "A Time to Kill"

This book is about a little black girl that was raped by two white men. The girls daddy feels the only way to get vindication and to be the man and daddy that he should be, he needs to kill them.

During the entire book, the focus is really about racism. The lop-sided view of many people, that if you are a different race, especially the black race, that you are nothing. Many times the 'n' word is used while telling the story and felt to be very offensive. For this reason the book is challenged.… Continue

Journal 14 - Rising Action

The Ku Klux Klan is called in. There is no way they are going to let this n--- get away with killing two white men in cold blood, no matter what they've done. They're words..."its just a n--- girl, it's not like she really matters." Even though they knew that these boys got what they deserved, they were killed by a black man and no way was he going to get away with that. As disgusting as this crime is, and though this child is just that, a child, it doesn't matter in the racist mind. An animal w… Continue

Journal 13 - Inciting Force & Conflict

Little Tonya, the 10 year old that was brutally raped, beaten, and left for dead by two white men, is expected to live. The two men are not. Dad, Carl Lee, has it all planned and awaits in a closet of the court house. When the time is right and the men are in position Carl Lee jumps from his hiding place and blows them away. Unfortunately, he is seen. First by the deputy that is transporting them, and by a maintenance man that works in the court. The most important thing is that the two child ra… Continue

Journal #12 - A Time To Kill (Exposition, Foreshadowing)

I chose this book out of process of elimination. I love the John Grisham writes anyway, and knew that this would be an exciting tale. The book starts off right away with action of a little 10 year old black girl that is raped and brutalized, then left for dead by two white men. The setting is in the south where racism is so prevalent. The little girl was found and brought to her home and told her mother what the men had done to her. The men are caught and arrested.

The father of the girl goes t… Continue
