Journal #15: My American Psycho Project

For my solo project I chose to stick with something I already know how to do so I made a website on wetpaint. I named it "Banning Psycho" because I thought it was cute and clever. On my wetpaint site I have a summary of the book and some of the characters. I then talk about why the book was banned. Next I mentioned information about the author, Bret Easton Ellis, and his other novels. Finally I end with a page about the movie, and a page comparing the movie to the book. I also have a future read… Continue

Journal #14: Reasons for Banning American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis

The biggest opposer of American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis is the National Organization for Women or NOW. They see the book as being misogynistic. I can understand their reasoning for seeing it that way even though the author has said numerous times that he doesn't hate women. In the book, Patrick Bateman sees women as "hardbodies" and that a woman with a good personality and hot looks does not exist. He also murders many woman and then cannibalizes their bodies. At one point he goes so far as… Continue

Journal #13: Patrick Bateman, American Psycho

In the book American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis, the main character is named Patrick Bateman. Patrick Bateman is a very wealthy man, who works at Pierce&Pierce on Wall Street just so he can fit in. The story is told from his point of view and seems to be more of his thoughts and feelings then a description of the current happenings. As the book is read the reader sees his obsession with drugs, drinking, and killing. The reader may even be amused by Patrick's random comments about desires to… Continue

Journal #12: Imagry in American Psycho

I am a good portion of the way through the book American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis. So far in the book I have met the main character, Patrick Bateman. The most obvious element in the book is the author's use of imagery. Many scenes have been so descriptive that I have to put the book down. Patrick Bateman is the one telling the story and since he is the killer he gets very detailed about the killing. He also goes into great deal about the threesomes he has with two lady prostitutes. The most a… Continue

Journal #11: American Psycho

The book I have chosen to read as my individual project is American Psycho by Bret Easton Elis. I chose this book because it sounded interesting to me. I also have been wanting to see the movie and figured I could compare and contrast the book and movie for part of my project. For my project I am going to use wetpaint again because I found it easy to use. Continue

Journal #10: My Part of the Chocolate War

The group project was to creat a wiki about the book The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier. We started by all reading the book and agreeing to do to use wetpaint. We then split up the objectives and agreed to work together on the summary. I missed one class and during that class my group memebers decided to add in character analysis, which we all contributed to. My part of the wiki was to talk about who bans the book. I did some research on the interent and found that mostly parents of junior high… Continue

Journal #9: The Chocolate War and banning

Since The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier was published in 1974, it has been one of the top ten most challenged books. Parents of junior high and high school students are the most frequent challengers of the book. With the theme of bullying and conformity it doesn't seem to be a book that needs to be banned. But parents seem to have a problem with the content. One parent actually counted and found 174 profanity words in the book. Profanity is a major cause of banning. Even more distrubing to par… Continue

Journal #8: The Chocolate War and Point of View

Robert Cormier wrote The Chocolate War in 1974 after his son said he didn't want to sell chocolates for the school fundraiser. The way he wrote the book gives the narrator an omniscient point of view. This point of view allows the narrator to understand the action, thoughts, and reasons for the author doing what he does. For example when the reader first meets Emile Janza he is siphoning gas. Because the book is written in the omniscient point of view the reader learns that Emile Janze sometimes… Continue

Journal #7: The Chocolate War and Conflict

The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier was written in 1974 but is still relevant today. I feel it is so relevant becuase of the major conflict reflected throughout the novel. Man versus society is a conflict that everyone can relate to. Jerry Renault is the main character of the novel. He is a freshman at a Catholic high school and tries hard to be on the football team and fit in with the other students. But then he is chosen by the Vigils to have an assingment. That is the beginning of the end. Je… Continue

Journal #6: The Chocolate Wars

Class on Tuesday was the end of Lady Chatterly's Lover and the beginning of groups. Some groups had already been formed. When the teacher asked me what I wanted to read I said "American Psycho" or "The Chocolate Wars." Jacqui then mentioned that she was interested in reading that book as well so my group was formed. Since Hana was not in class she was put into my group as well. So after class instead of going to check the book out from my local library I decided to go to Changing Hands book stor… Continue

Journal #5: Review of Lady Chatterly's Lover

Upon finishing Lady Chatterly's Lover I was only partly interested in the book. I found some parts very boring and hard to keep my interest. I found some parts where relateable but other parts made no sense to me. I also disliked the way the book ended. I wanted to know if Connie and Mellors ended up happily together forever. And what happened with Clifford and Mrs. Bolton? As much as there where things I disliked I also found many things very interesting. I enjoyed seeing Connie struggle with h… Continue

Journal #4: Theme of Relationships

In Lady Chatterely's Lover there is a major theme of relationships, the need for another person. In chapters 13 thru 18 this becomes very evident. Connie realizes just as she is leaving for Venice that she wants to spend her life with Mellors. Mellors confuses that all the women he has been with have been trouble, and that he had resorted to being alone until Connie showed up. The deeper in love Connie falls with Mellors the more and more she wants to leave Clifford. Clifford mean while wants Co… Continue

Journal #3: Conflict

In Lady Chatterly's Lover there are many different conflicts going on. But in chapters 9 thru 12 the most apparent conflict is man versus self. Lady Chatterly is fighting with herself throughout the whole novel. But in chapter ten Lawernce really shows Connie's mixed emotions. For example, after having sex with the game keeper the second time, Connie wants to leave but at the same time she wants to stay. Connie also struggles with her desire to be with him and to also keep herself to herself, to… Continue

Journal #2: Foreshadowing

In chapters 3 thru 8 of Lady Chatterly's Lover I believe the author is foreshadowing the future of Mrs. Constance Chatterly. The reader sees Lady Chatterly becoming increasingly disconnected from everyone. She even runs from her husband to a park that he can't access. Shortly after her father asks her why she doesn't get a beau, Michaelis comes to visit her husband. The attraction between Michaelis and Constance leads to sex. Not long after their first time together, Michaelis falls in love with… Continue

Journal #1: Exposition

In chapters 1 and 2 of Lady Chatterly's Lover, the reader is introduced to the mian characters. We meet Mrs. Constance Chatterly, the protagonist of the novel. We also meet Mr. Clifford Chatterly, a wheel chair bound man. The Chatterlys had a month long honeymoon before Clifford was sent to the war again, where he was then injured. Before marrying Constance had plenty of men in her life. This is so shocking because it takes place in the 1920s or around then. At first, Constance and her sister sp… Continue
