Banned Books and Censorship

I want to talk a little about the foreshadowing toward the beginning of the book. The first part I noticed was when it talk about sex and the fact that Clifford was a virgin before marrying. Sex meant little to him, “the intimacy was deeper, more personal than that.” Constance also was more into the mental and intellectual connection. Therefore when Clifford was sent home “smashed” and was no longer able to perform sex there was no surprise that Connie stuck to him passionately.

Early on the book also mentions Connie wanting a baby, even if only to fortify against Emma. I’m not done with the book yet but I’m pretty sure one way or another she’ll get one. In her second winter at Wragby Connie’s father talked of her being a demi-vierge, she was bothered but it gave me reason to believe an affair was coming. When the book stated, “she knew that he didn’t mind whether she were a demi-vierge or a demi-monde, so long as he didn’t absolutely know, and wasn’t made to see.” That’s when there was no doubt. A thirty year old Irishman named Michaelis went to Wragby to visit and the affair occurred.

Clifford’s buddies had a talk about sex that seemed to get to Clifford. He then takes a walk with Connie and brings up the subject of a son from another man. He continued to call the child an “it” which really bothered Connie. He also goes on talking about being interwoven in their marriage and she didn’t know if she agreed or liked what he was saying. I have not read far enough yet to see what happens but is seems likes she is getting scared and wanting to leave or defiantly wanting a child. We’ll see.
