Banned Books and Censorship

South Mountain Community College

I will finish off my last four chapters of the book A Wrinkle in Time with the resolution and go into who and why this book was banned. Once Meg, Calvin and Charles found Mr. Murry everything kind of seems to be going downhill, Charles is captured by IT, and IT is a huge brain that is very controlling, captivating you to be IT’s slave forever. Mr. Murry being behind the complex controls of the Tesseract, he manages to take them to another planet who they find these beasts that help them on their quest to getting back Charles from IT and returning home. After being through so much Meg finally realizes her calling and now knows that she is the only one that can save Charles and ventures out, finding that love is the answer. Defeating the brain with her love she saves her brother and the three women from the beginning of the story Mrs. Who, Which, and Whatsit come and bring them all back to planet Earth, reuniting with mother and twin brothers (this ending the story). I find this very hard to believe someone would think of banning this book, it gives the reader a sense of such adventure and childhood memories that it makes me think of when I was younger and that the evil brain was such a horrible fate, so powerful and almighty. But for the most part this book was, “banned by various religious groups that feel the book undermines religious beliefs. Some critics claim that the book challenges their idea of God. (If you remember, L’Engle uses some biblical references in the novel.) Some people think it’s too Christian, while others think it is not Christian enough” ( Scholastic, Helping Children Around the World to Read and Learn | Scholastic.com. 13 May 2009 .). It was also found in the website, http://bannedbookschallenge.blogspot.com/2007/10/wrinkle-in-time-bonnies-review.html, that in “1990 Challenged in the Anniston, Alabama schools because the book sends a mixed signal to children about good and evil. The complainant also objected to listing the name of Jesus Christ together with the names of great artists, philosophers, scientists and religious leaders when referring to defenders of Earth against evil. And in 1996 Challenged, but retained, by the Catawba County School Board in Newton, North Carolina. A parent requested the book be pulled from the school libraries because it allegedly undermines religious beliefs” (Jacobs, Bonnie. "A Wrinkle in Time ~ Bonnie's review." Banned Books. 3 Oct. 2007. 13 May 2009 .).
