Banned Books and Censorship

At the beginning of the book there is a lot of imagery on how the characters and the house look, I’m going to give a few examples. First I’ll talk about Clifford. He has a small motor chair that he drives himself slowly around in the park. We know it is in the 1920’s so that helps to picture the chair. It goes on to say he has a ruddy, health-looking face, and pale-blue, challenging bright eyes. “His shoulders were broad and strong, his hands were very strong. He was expensively dressed, and wore handsome neckties from Bond Street.”

The book is also quoted saying, “Constance, his wife, was a ruddy, country-looking girl with soft brown hair and sturdy body, and slow movements, full of unusual energy. She had big, wandering eyes, and a soft mild voice, and seemed just to have come from her native village.” This gives a very good detailed description of the main characters which are Constance and Clifford.

There is also the Wragby house where they live. The book gives a long detailed description as well that I’m going to summarize. The house was in the middle of a park of oak trees. It was made of brown stone and was a long low old house built in the middle of the eighteenth century. The city went on for a long mile with brick houses and black slate roofs. At a distance you could see Tevershall pit on the hill with its clouds of steam and smoke. Those descriptions are what really helped me get a visual of the characters and location.

I agree with your descriptions on their character visualizations and setting. I also see another connection with the way both Constance and Clifford was portrayed. Clifford had broad and strong shoulders and wore expensive clothing while Constance was somewhat more country and very mild. This shows a constrast between Constance and Clifford from the start of the book that I had never noticed before.
