Blog #8 Theme 1984
There are many themes throughout the book, such as fear, control; brain wash, obedience and oppression just to name a few. But what I found interesting was that Winston even though he was obedient and did everything he was told to do, deep down he knew better, he knew that the government was brain washing him. He knew that the government lied and that he no longer wanted to be a “slave” of this political party. So when he bought the journal and wrote his self thoughts even though it was against the law, he didn’t care; he was scared of getting arrested, but yet wrote. Another interesting thing that I saw was that Winston would often dream and daydream to escape from reality. So I found his dreams very important. He would dream about his mother, who disappeared twenty years ago, the golden country , the dark-haired girl and a man named O’Brien who tells him in his dream to meet him “in the place where is no darkness”. He dreams of his mother which is the past and then he dreams of the golden country which he never been before which it’s probably imaginary or the future. He also dreams of the dark-haired girl who in reality is always watching him, and he thinks she is a party agent and doesn’t trust her, is fantasy or just lust. And lastly there is O’Brien who is based on a man that Winston saw at the “two minutes hate” maybe his dream means things to be come.
So far I see Winston as a character that wants to break free from political oppression but can’t do anything about it. He is just one man. But at the same time I see that there a little fight in him, there rebellion beneath he’s obedience.
