Blog# 9 Factors that challenged 1984

The book was challenged on the counts of communist content, sexual content, immorality and profanity. There were also considered to show communism in a favorable light as well as “communistic ties”. Although this book was challenged many times for this reasons the book shows us a bigger picture than just communism but what happens in a totalitarian society. 1984 was a warning that any government is capable of this kind of power of total control in their country. In my opinion I wouldn’t have banned this book because this book wasn’t pro-communist in fact the book was just the opposite it was pro-freedom and against all-powerful governments that oppress their people. But there is same people that disagree with my opinion

In the United Sates it was challenged in 1881 in Jackson Country, Florida. In 1963 in a Wisconsin school a principal’s objection prevented the book from being purchased. The Censors and the Schools, a teacher in Wrenshall, Minnesota, refused to remove 1984 from his reading list, leading to his dismissal. He was reinstated. And in the "textbook battles" of the 1960s in Texas; ten novels were removed from the libraries of the four Amarillo high schools and Amarillo College. As late as 1981, similar complaints were still being lodged. A Baptist minister in Sneads, Florida, Rev. Len Coley, attempted to have the book banned from school use on numerous occasions, often claiming the support of other church groups who later denied involvement. Many cases do not turn out so well, however. Many objections to the novel end with its removal from the classroom or the library or with it not being purchased. Although many critics already consider the book a classic; the book 1984 is only present in 43 percent of school libraries.
