Journal 15 - reasons for banning "A Time to Kill"

This book is about a little black girl that was raped by two white men. The girls daddy feels the only way to get vindication and to be the man and daddy that he should be, he needs to kill them.

During the entire book, the focus is really about racism. The lop-sided view of many people, that if you are a different race, especially the black race, that you are nothing. Many times the 'n' word is used while telling the story and felt to be very offensive. For this reason the book is challenged.

The book also goes into actions that the Klu Klux Klan takes when injustice is being done to the white people because of another race, in this instance the black people. It gives a bit of insight into how irrational the ideas of these people are. For anyone to feel that a child deserves to be raped and beaten just because they are a different race can be described as nothing short of idiocy. Feelings like this, and more, still exist today. The story is a work of fiction but the feelings are very real.

I don't feel that the book should be banned due to the word because of freedom of speech. People are called "bad" words all the time. As far as name calling goes that is all it is is a word. I do understand though the harshness that is behind it, and what the word represents to many people.
