Guy Montag: The protagonist of the book, he is a firemen that makes fires and burns books. He sees his job as normal and comfortable until he meets a young girl name Clarisse that shows him that he's not happy living the way he is. He begins reading books and yearning to understand. Working as a firemen, he is very cautious of what could happen to him, but later, does not care and freely shows his wanting of the books. At work, Captain Beatty is constantly showing him up on his knowledge of literature. Eventually, Guy's own house is chosen to be burned and he chooses to lead a path of 'rebellion.'
Clarisse McClellan: A 17 year old girl that show only in part, but has great impact in the book. She's the one that leads Guy into wondering, into thinking and not just following. A peculiar girl in their thoughtless society. Supposedly she dies when a a car runs her over.
Captain Beatty: Captain of Guy's firemen division. Although he is the highest person in the firemen ranking, he is very knowledgeable in all kinds of literature, quoting poetry and famous writers. He constantly grinds into Guy about how wrong books are and how society is better off without all of it. He eventually gets Guy angry enough in which Guy turns on him and kills him with a flamethrower, in which Guy later realizes that Beatty wanted. He wanted to die because he couldn't stand the society he was living in.
Mildred Montag: Guy's comfortable wife that talked to family in 3 tv walls and listened to Seashell Radios 24/7. Sickly enough that she took a whole bottle of sleeping pills and had to get her stomach pumped. Everything she knows, hears, and says goes through on ear and out the other. She just wants to live comfortably, she doesn't want to think, she just knows what people thinks is wrong or right.
Professor Faber: Intelligent Literature professor that Guy had met in a park once upon a time. He meets him again, asking for help in bringing back the books. Faber first refuses because he sees himself as a coward who didn't do anything before and can't do anything now. But Faber is convinced when Guy begins burning a Bible in front of him. He implants a Seashell radio-type walkie-talkie in Guy's ear that will tell him things, and let himself hear others. He leads Guy back to his home, to work, and to run later on.
Granger: A hobo that Guy meets on his escape, he is the leader of the 'Book People.' He is intelligent and patient and is determined to lead the books back into the light.
Mrs. Phelps and Mrs. Bowles: Mildred's clone-like friends that think nothing, talk about nothing, ,and say nothing important. They live life daily like Mildred and don't want to be troubled by sad, angry, or scary things especially things like books.
